Aronson & Gonzales Jigsaw Classroom Experiment Aronson Alexander Gonzales Reason for the Experiment Results The Experiment Education Works Cited Born on January 9, 1932 Learned under Aronson at the University of California in Santa Cruz Developed in response to schools being desegregated He divided the students into small groups, mixed by gender, race, and ethnicity, and assigned each student a certain part of Eleanor Roosevelt's biography. For the first few days students still called each other names and the classrooms were still hostile, however as the students realized they needed the information to do well, this changed. It is a well established method that is still used in classrooms today. "The Jigsaw Classroom: A Cooperative Learning Technique." The Jigsaw Classroom: A Cooperative Learning Technique. Social Psychology Network, 2000. Web. 03 Jan. 2013. <http://www.jigsaw.org/>. B.A. from Brandeis University in 1954 M.A. from Wesleyan University in 1956 Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University in 1959 He has taught at Harvard University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Texas, and the University of California. The only psychologist to have won American Psychology Association's highest awards in all three major academic categories: distinguished writing (1973), distinguished teaching (1980), and distinguished research (1999).
Currently a proffessor at the University of California in Santa Cruz. Current president of the University of California After a few weeks of this, classrooms were hostile and violent between the different racial groups.

School board brought in Aronson to figure out a way to get rid of the hostility in classrooms.

Observed that the source of the hostility was from the groups being competitive against one another.

Made the Jigsaw Classroom to create a cooperative environment rather than a competitive one. Performed in a 5th grade classroom. Groups were then reconstructed so that students with the same part were all in the same group. They went over the material for their part as a group, after which returned to their first groups and shared their information for each part with each other. Students began to drop the hostility and ask questions that were relevant, and they started to see each other in new, positive perspectives. Hostility disappeared and students that were once picked on gained self-esteem, as well as an increase in overall performance in the classroom. Smiley Face. Digital image. HESA. N.p., n.d.
