Sedentary Lifestyle...
Unhealthy Choices....
The Problem
Nearly one in four children does not participate in any free-time physical activity.
A typical American youth spends approximately 4 to 5 hours a day watching tv, using the computer, or playing video games.
The average teen eats fast food twice a week.
Over the past four decades, obesity rates have soared among children of all age groups, increasing nearly five-fold among those ages 6-11.
Today, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese.
Some experts believe that if obesity among children continues to increase, our current generation of children will be the first in American History to live shorter lives than their parents.
One in every three children
born in the year 2000 will
develop diabetes in their life.
Left unabated, obesity will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America.
The Solution
Do you remember...
... when Saturdays were about riding bikes? Playing in the woods? Tag?
Do the math.
Be the example. Children of one obese parent have a fifty percent chance of being obese themselves.Eighty percent if both parents are obese.
Don't know where to start? Encourage your kids to be active. This can be anything from organized sports to a family walk every evening.
Make healthy choices. Educate yourself about nutrition and portion control. It's not a diet, its a lifestyle. Give your kids the tools they need to maintain a healthy weight and live long and happy lives.
Programs like the NFL's play 60 exist to spread such awareness about the importance of being active.
Put simply...
"More than ever we as parents and a nation must do something about the growth of obesity in our children. We must do more than just talk, we must be concerned enough to act" -Lee Haney Chairment of the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports
