Transcript of "Rattlesnake Hunt" by: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
"Rattlesnake Hunt" Went to Arcadia in the upper Everglades to hunt rattlesnakes in January
Rawlings went to write an article for Ross Allen
Hunting ground was in Big Prairie
Snakes lived in gopher holes in the winter
Ross uses an “L” shaped steel prong to hunt snakes
Snakes aren’t active in the winter; the cold makes them sluggish
Ross caught four snakes by noon on the first day
Having snakes in the truck attracted snakes TO the truck
Hunted Water Snakes at night. Ross hunted these with bare hands
Ross had to dig some snakes out of the holes
Snakes pay no attention to a man standing perfectly still
Rattlers strike only for paralyzing and killing their food and for defense
Lie by and wait for rats or rabbits, strike, then follow the trail till they find paralyzed prey
Rawlings found and caught a snake hiding under a violet
Dropped snake three times trying to cage it
Ross finally had to cage the snake for Rawlings
