How to ask'em to get'em thinkin'
1. Write down your questions before you teach!
2. Make sure you have a variety of questions prepared.
Compare/contrast
summarize
infer
Clarify
3. Avoid Ping Pong Responses
Can you repeat what Maggie just said in your own words?
Do you agree with Trevor's reasoning? Why or Why not?
Who thinks they can explain why this happened?
An Example!
4. Provide opportunities for structured student to student interactions.
(That means cooperative structures such as think, write, pair share)
5. wait time... wait time...wait time
Wait Time 1: Wait 10 seconds after asking a question to call on a student.
Wait Time 2: Wait at least as long after calling on a student so they can prepare an answer.
Wait time 3: Wait after student response to see if they'll elaborate or another student will continue.
