The Circulatory System
The Human Body
Respiratory System
Digestive System
Oxygen
Carbon Dioxide
Nutrients
Function
Like a highway system the circulatory system links all the parts of your body.
Carries needed substances to cells and waste products away.
Blood also contains cells that fight disease.
Broken down into 3 Parts
Pulmonary
Coronary
Systemic
Oxygen
Carbon Dioxide
Lungs receives blood low in O2 and high in CO2
Blood returns from the lungs rich with O2
Supplies nourishment to the body via blood vessels
3 Types of Vessels
Arteries- carry blood away from the heart
Veins- carry blood back to the heart
Capillaries- Tiny vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and body cells.
2 Loops Create a Figure 8 Pattern
Loop 1: Lungs and Back
The Pulmonary Artery sends O2 depleted blood to the lungs (blues)
The Pulmonary Vein sends O2 rich blood to the heart to be pumped to the rest fo the body (red)
Loop 2: The Body and Back
The Aorta sends O2 rich blood to the body (red)
At capillaries O2 moves out of the blood and into the body cells
While CO2 passes from the body cells and into the blood (blue)
Blood flows back to the heart via the Vena Cava into the right atrium completing the second loop.
The Heart
Pumps blood throughout the body
5.7 Liters of blood per day
Beats over 100,000 times a day
4 Chambers
Right Atrium
Right Ventricle
Left Atrium
Left Ventricle
The Beat
Lub- Dub
The heart relaxes, allowing blood in
The atria contract forcing blood into the ventricles LUB
The ventricles squeeze blood into the blood vessels DUB
Heart Disease
Strokes
Diabetes
High Blood Pressure
When things go wrong
#1 Killer
Prevention
Stabalize body temperature, and pH levels- homeostasis
