The Medium is the Massage
"The medium, process, of our time
 - electric technology -
is reshaping and restructuring patterns of
social interdependence and every aspect
of our personal life."
"Everything is changing -
you, your family, your neighborhood, your education,
your job, your government, your relation to 'the others'."
How does that make you feel?
If humans traditionally don't do well with change,
as is commonly thought,
how long will it take for current social media to catch on?
Who are "the others"?
"All media are extensions of some human
faculty - psychic or physical."
Would you - could you -
go without these new
extenstions? For how long?
"The goose quill put an end to talk, it abolished mystery..."
Is this true?
Haven't we found new mysteries to express?
Why do we still have so many issues with miscommunication then?
"Print technology created the public. Electric technology created the mass."
What's next?
"Enviornments are invisible. Their ground rules, pervasive structure,
and overall patterns elude easy perception."
What's your enviornment?
"As new technologies come into play, people are
less and less convinced of the importance of self-expression. Teamwork succeeds private effort."
Is that really true?
How does that make you feel?
Are individuals no longer important?
"Education must shift from instruction, from imposing of stencils, to discovery - to probing and exploration and to the recognition of the language of forms."
What are the best ways to do this?
"You must talk to the media, not to the programmer. To talk to the programmer is like complaining to a hot dog vendor at a ballpark about how badly your favorite team is playing."
What do you make of this quote?
