Hawaii Public Schools' Ethnic Breakdown
Recognizing the uniqueness of Hawaii's population, the Department now collects data on more than 20 races and ethnicities
This diversity exists across geographic boundaries

How demographically different is Hawaii from its peers?
The Class of 2026 is even less concentrated than the class of 2013
The other large districts in the U.S. differ largely in how their Hispanic, Black and White populations are distributed.

Those three racial/ethnic groups combine to make up 84% of the average large U.S. district.
In Hawaii those three ethnic groups combine to make up just 23% of the student body.

The lighter blue bars are the more traditional categories found in other states/districts, while the darker blue represent categories that are uncommon outside of Hawaii
Today's kindergarteners are somewhat less likely than today's high school seniors to belong to the largest three ethnic and racial groups
We observe a similarly shaped distribution across the counties.
