2-3: Subtracting Integers
Addition and subtraction are inverse
operations—they “undo” each other.
Instead of subtracting a number you
can add its opposite.
So: -5 - (-2) =
-5 + 2 =
-3
And:
17 - (-7) =
17 + 7 =
24
Lastly:
20 - (-21) =
20 + 21 =
41
Find the difference of 32ºF and -10ºF.
So, 32 - (-10) =
32 + 10 =
42ºF
In other words:
1. Change the subtraction to addition.
2. Change the number you are subtracting to its opposite!
