World-Crafting (and World of Warcraft) Anastasia Salter What makes a world? What do you see when you go outside? all world-building begins with observation: even if the observation does not begin with your own eyes and even though the world you are building doesn't yet exist who lives there? who makes your world home? characters come from both man and myth video game characters are usually "larger than life" very few characters are "original" -- instead, ideas are reborn and reframed for new worlds antagonists are defined by the needs of their worlds--and their "heroes" these characters flow from your world's foundations: mechanics + context provide your characters with something to stand upon with changes in a world's foundations -- everything changes observe re-imagine find your people find their purpose understand their enemies strengthen your foundations let the world transform the game (and let the game transform the world)
