Services for children and young people
Young people's journey
Hooking learners in
Think about the space and environment - who owns it?

Explore new technologies as an incentive and a sign of trust

Develop flexible routes in, and open access

Use young people to 'champion’ your project or offer

Recognise young people's varied life situations, and link
up with others they are working with

Relationships take priority

Develop confidence early on with ‘quick wins', maintain this with ‘tangible’ rewards

Make learning ‘useful’ and relevant, and build on learners’ interests

Create the right environment and work with the right people

Know and listen to the young people

Treat them as individuals, but also explore group dynamics

Sustaining learners' involvement
Develop good quality relationships and keep the approach informal

Have high expectations and reward achievement.

Allow young people to develop at their own pace

Encourage young people to ‘reverse’ teach about one of their interests

Have faith and high expectations

Facilitate 'team meetings' to promote working as a group

Think about what young people want from the project or their work with you

Gear activity towards (intended) outcome, and explain it at the outset

Tailor the learning by considering how individuals like to learn

Project learning positively - embed learning in subject of interest but don’t disguise or deceive

Link learning to vocational interests

Recognise achievement, and involve the young people
