Write a 500 word critical reflection (1000 words for a pair) on the effectiveness of ICT in supporting pupils’ learning on a field trip.
the benefits of recording the visit with images, video and sound recordings;
how ICT supports subject learning in the context of a field trip;
which parts of the ICT Programme of Study might be addressed;
how your own ICT capability has developed as a consequence of completing this assessment. Thoughts on Text Thoughts on modelling Giving accurate instructions to an ICT device helps learners develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills Simulation programs allow pupils to see processes which would be difficult to explore in real life Computer models create environments which allow learners to make predictions and test hypotheses Modelling programs provide a learning resource which supports pupil discussion In the '99 Curriculum KS1: pupils should be taught to use text ... to develop their ideas
KS2: pupils should be taught to how to develop and refine ides by bringing together, organising and reorganising text, tables, images and sound as appropriate. In the Alexander Review "ICT should receive more explicit attention ... within the language component"
"[Children are] 'peerers' who use electronic media to share, socialise, collaborate and create"
"Such activities ... should be counted in part as variants or extensions of literacy"
"[ICT] demands a rigour no less than should apply to the handling of the written and spoken word" In Rose ICT:
Collaborate, communicate and share information using connectivity to work with, and present to, people and audiences within and beyond the school
English, communication and languages:
Explore writing using different media including web pages and multimodal formats in English and in other languages. Using Clicker Writing frames can be created to support sentence creation.
Grid editing makes it easy to create differentiated writing resources.
Speech output allows pupils to check the accuracy of their writing.
Pictures provide visual clues to word recognition.
A simple interface makes the program accessible to pupils. ICT in the Literacy Hour Ensure the focus is on literacy – not ICT.
Use a word processor to model re-drafting in shared writing sessions.
Use ICT for independent writing.
Presentation technology can helpful in sharing writing in class.
Devices such as audio recorders and overlay boards can also support literacy activities. Over to you:

Advice about how to behave on the trip;
Simplified map of the locality (avoid cutting and pasting a complex map from the internet);
3 activity sheets for the pupils to undertake whilst out on the trip. Pupils are required to use a digital camera, an audio recorder and/or a camcorder as part of the activities A visual design style is often more effective than a text-based one.
Design activities which exploit the opportunities of the venue.
Create a neat booklet in A4 format. Use your design skills to create simple and attractive page layouts.
When you submit, please avoid the excessive use of plastic flimsies, e.g. staple your sheets together to form a booklet. Reflect critically: what? so what? now what?
