This is a presentation created for ATIA in Chicago 2009 - Oct 28-31. It my idea for getting students with more significant cognitive disabilities involved in their own learning, and how web2.0 tools can help that process.

Boardmaker is a software program that uses clip art of picture communication symbols which are used in creating printed communication boards, device overslays, worksheets, and schedules. Mayer Johnson has just come out with a new version, and it has much more diversity than previous version. This list is to offer support and ideas to parents, teachers, and SLPs that use it with their children or students.

Wanted to get kids more involved in learning.
My kids can do this!

This needed to be the kids' project
students are mostly non-verbal
needed a communication system that allowed students to be involved in project
gave "ownership" of project
allowed students to use materials above their reading level
Could sort by tag (animal, desert, etc…)

Students enjoyed the process
really got into their animal
learned a lot about the desert
given sentences about their animal and distracters
Students were able to pick the sentence about their animal with approximately 80% accuracy
Empowered students to create a 
presentation that was theirs
a versatile tool
offering students more opportunities to
pick or edit visuals used within the presentation
utilization of other online tools (i.e. Glogster.com) for physical presentation
