"VIOLENCE"
A Road Block to being an Upstander.

What is Violence really?
We hear this term used all the time
 but do we understand it?
You May Ask...
Injury done to that
 which is entitled to respect,
reverence, or observance
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/violence
Violence occurs everyday to every type of person no matter their ethnicity, economical status, or nationality. But why?
GOOD QUESTION.
You May Ask...
Where do we see
violence Daily?
Media!

Wouldn't this be better?

Huh.
What's the solution, to stop all this confusion?
Rewrite the constitution, change the drug which you're using
Rewrite the constitution or the emancipation proclamation
we fight inflation, yet the president's still on vacation

BDP posse
I say: one two three, the crew is called BDP
And if you wanna go to the tip top
stop the violence in the hip-hop, Y-O

This might sound a little strange to you
well here's the reason I came to you
We gotta put our heads together, and stop the violence
Cause real bad boys move in silence
When you're in a club, you come to chill out
not watch someones blood just spill out
That's what these other people want to see
another race fight endlessly
You know we're being watched, you know we're being seen
Some wish to destroy this scene called hip-hop
But I won't drop
not I or Scott LaRock
Now here is the message that we bring today:
hip-hop will surely decay
if we as a people don't stand up and say:
STOP THE VIOLENCE

Time and time again, as I pick up the pen
as my thoughts emerge, these are those words
I glance at the paper to know what's going on
someone's doing wrong, the story goes on
Mary Lue's had a baby someone else decapitated
the drama of the world shouldn't keep us so frustrated
I look, but it doesn't coincide with my books
social studies when I speak upon political crooks
It's just the presidents, and all the money they spent
all the things they invent and how the house is so immaculate
They paid missiles, my family's eating gristle
then they get upset when the press blows the whistle
Of course the main profiles are kept low
you temper with some jobs, now the press is controlled
Not only newspapers, but every single station
you only get to hear the president is on vacation
But ehrm, stay calm, there's no need for alarm
You say "go back" to your mom, and you're off to Vietnam
You shoot to kill, come back and you're a veteran
but how many veterans are out there pedaling?
There's no telling, 'cause they continue selling
As quiet as it's kept, I won't go into depth
You can talk about Nigeria, people used to laugh at ya.
Now I take a look, I say "USA for Africa?"

Movies
Wouldn't this be better?
What does this Movie say?
    * Are consequences of the violence shown? If so, what purpose does it serve the plot? How does it develop a character?
    * Do you see people hurt or bleeding?
    * Do those who die simply disappear?
    * Are the economic and social consequences of violence clear? If not, how would the story change if it were shown?
Media violence has a different effect on children than it
does on adults.

model behavior they see in the media. If kids don't see the consequences of violence, it teaches them that violence doesn't cause serious harm. When heroes use violence it sends a message that violence is an appropriate way to respond to problems. If you were a child, what lessons about the world might you learn from the program you just watched?

see much more violence in the media than actually exists in real life. That's because producers believe that they have to include extraordinary violence in order to keep viewers interested. As a result, heavy TV viewers think that the world is more dangerous and violent than it actually is. This phenomenon is often called the "mean world" syndrome. How high is your mean world quotient? Do the shows you watch make you feel more fearful?

300, a movie based on a war of King Xerxes's Persian army of 170,000 against Sparta's 300 is completely engulfed by violence. Although violence in this movie is what kept the good men going, there should have been a different motive to fix this war. I understand that the Spartans were trying to save their homes and country but if they were to die upstanding and not fighting, I think they would have died with more dignity than shown at the end of this movie.

Balancing of parts of one's self.
Respecting one's life.
Standing up and doing something
that is right morally.
How did it affect...
Looking back at the quality of Jesus' life over many sources, I take that Jesus' life was very brutal. At his time, any nation as more powerful than another and would most likely go under some type of attack. If not killed by disease, the next probable cause of death would be to die in battle. The average lifespan was 30 year and not many made it over that.
Also, seen by Jesus' death of crucifixion, it shows just how troubled and violent his times were. Crucifixion was a daily event in Jesus’ time and was not considered out of the norms. This process was an effective device to scare the people to obey authorities,. What a gruesome world to have to live in.

How they overcame it...

But he was a humble seeker of Truth. He was a man with exceptional sincerity, honesty and truthfulness. For him, understanding meant action. Once any principle appealed to him, he immediately began to translate that in practice. He did not flinch from taking risks and did not mind confessing mistakes. No opposition, scorn or ridicule could affect him. Truth was his sole guiding star. He was ever-growing; hence he was often found inconsistent. He was not concerned with appearing to be consistent. He preferred to be consistent only with the light within.

He sacrificed his all and identified himself with the poorest of the poor. He dressed like them, lived like them. In the oppressed and the depressed people, he saw God. For him, they too were sparks of the divine light. They might not have anything else, but they too had a soul. For Gandhi, soul-force was the source of the greatest power. He strove to awaken the soul-force within himself and within his fellowmen. He was convinced that the potentialities of the soul-force have no limit. He himself was a living example of this conviction.
India was not a united country. It was a country divided in different classes, races, in people with different languages, cultures and religions.
It was a society where almost half of the population was under house arrest. One-fourth of the population, the mostly devastated classes, was living under the marginalized life. Many did not have a single full meal every day. Gandhi made the oppressed sections wake up and break their chains.

Although, I have not been personally attacked by violence like others I am sure have, I have learned what a great affect it has on teens today, mostly in the category of Dating. As learned in our notes on May 23rd, dating violence is not only date rape. It is violence which affects teens through many ways -physically, psychologically, emotionally, and socially. It occurs in every high school regardless of race, ethnicity. As with abuse of women, abusive teen dating relationships exhibit a pattern of repeated and increasingly violent abuse.
Although dying a violent death, Jesus was never for violence. He wanted to abolish it in every way that he could. By giving into violence, and letting himself die, Jesus was saving us from our sins and wanted to bring us closer to the reign of God. The reign of God is not a place but a state of being where there is nothing to fear as told by Mrs. Garcia in the 1st semester of Gospel Stories, Gospel Choices. Jesus showed that he himself was fearless and obtained the virtue of courage among others.
I overcome violence in many ways. As trying to stray from it at all times, when I do encounter it I try my hardest to abolish it just as Jesus did. I find that I am more able to fight against it than to be dragged into it. You can say I am an “upstander” to any type of violence: Abuse of everyone-children, adults, different races, and social castes
