We need to understand and respond to the individual communication, language needs and preferences of children and adults we meet on a day to day basis.

How can we establish their needs?
1. How do you think children want to be communicated with?
2. What about the adults? - colleagues, other professionals and parents!

There are many factors to consider when promoting effective face-to-face communication:
Environment – various environmental factors influence communication, such as the design or layout of the space, decoration, lighting, colour, furniture, smells and noise.

Watch the following video and identify the factors that has lead to the effective communication in the clip. Record these on the worksheet provided.


It is very important to consider what style of communication suits each situation.
Face to face is the most often used method, but this is not always relevant.
Task- communication preferences In groups consider the following situations and decide what method of communication would be most suitable.
What does this pictue say to you?
You have been asked to design a questionnaire that could be used in your setting, to find out about the communication preferences of parents. What questions would consider important?

Discuss your questions with your class group, consider your workplace policies for communicating with parents and add anything else specific to your setting that might be useful.

Task 1
Look back over your questions and think of situations where it would not be appropriate to use a questionnaire to find out communication preferences. What better way can you think of to find out preferences in these situations? Use the table provided.

What about workplace communications?

There are many factors to consider when communicating with others. The starting point is to consider which communication method to use as it essential to choose the right style of communication. In many cases we will use face to face interaction, but this is not always the case.
Identify situations in the work setting and the most appropriate way to communicate.
