Porifera!
Porifera and Cniaria!
There are 3 major classes of this phylum
Porifera or sponges are aysmmetrical or they can even be radially symmetrical
Sponges produce asexually and sexually
Hexactinellida
Calcarea
Demospongiae
What are the common features??
Sponges structures are very unique. They are always
remolding themseleves to fine-tune their filter-feeding
system.
Sponges have a system of pores and canals
in which water passes through. The water
movement is made by the beating of the
flagella.
They are held together by skeleton
that is made up of collagen and spicules.
The sponges capture food like plankton and bacteria that is brought
close to them through the water currents.
The food is taken into individual cells
and digested there.
Animals from the Porifera phylum
DO NOT move!
That is why they are commonly thought of as plants!
Do sponges help us?
Sponges have recently been discovered to be
sources of biomedical compounds!

Cnidaria!
There are 4 major classes of this phylum
Hydrozoa
Cubozoa
Scphyozoa
Anthozoa
Cnidarians are radially symmetrical
or biradially symmetrical
What are their common features?
They have a single body opening which is the mouth
and anus that leads into the gastrovascular cavity and is surrounded by tentacles with microscopic stinging capsules.
Cnidarians produce sexually and asexually
Cnidarians bodies have two layers (epidermis and gastrodermis) and sometimes a third layer.
Cnidaria include sea anemones, corals, jellyfish, sea pens, and hydra,
but jellyfish are the only ones that move.
How do they get food?
Cnidarians get food by capturing their prey with their tentacles which then stings them and kills them.
Cnidarians can harm humans if you touch or step on one because they will sting you with their tentacles!
